3 Skincare Methods That Should Be Your Staples



Here are three skincare methods I learned about years ago that are staples today. Two of these are ancient ayurvedic practices and the last is simply one that isn't usually part of most skin care routines. I’m big on having smooth and soft skin and if you are too, this is the post you gotta finish!




Dry Brushing


Why you should Dry Brush

Lymphatic drainage

The lymphatic system is responsible for removing toxins from your body by filterings fluids through your lymph nodes. This keeps you protected from illness-causing pathogens.

Cellulite

This benefit is only supported by testimonials from people who’ve seen a reduced appearance of cellulite.

Decrease muscle tension

Using circular motions helps your muscles relax and contribute to de-stressing after a workout or a long day at work.

Exfoliation

If no other benefit is proven, you at least get full-body exfoliation that will soften and smoothen your skin by sloughing off dead skin cells.

How to Dry Brush

  • Choose a brush with natural bristles that won’t be too harsh on your skin.

  • Start with your feet and work your way up using circular, clockwise motions. Make sure you start your new self-care ritual with soft pressure. Once you get used to the dry brushing process you can increase the pressure and reap more benefits.

  • Proceed with your shower as normal and add your body creams and oils.

  • Disclaimer: Don’t use your brush of choice on your face or over broken skin. If you have a skin condition like psoriasis or eczema, you may cause more harm than good [obviously lol]. This method is not proven by science so if you have clinical-grade skin issues, this natural alternative should not replace recommendations from a board-certified Dermatologist.

Oil Pulling

Why you should oil pull

This also isn’t backed by science. However, it won’t hurt to try it anyways.

  • Keeps gums moisturized

  • Removes odor-causing bacteria and toxins

  • Whitens teeth. Supposedly, at least. I can't give testimony to this fact and neither can science.

  • Prevents cavities and reduces the likelihood of gingivitis

How to oil pull

  • Choose any oil. Sesame oil was historically used for oil pulling given its robust taste. You can also choose coconut oil, olive oil, or any other food-grade oil.

  • Use a tablespoon worth of oil to swish around your mouth.

  • Pull the oil through your teeth until it’s opaque and reaches a watery consistency.

  • Spit the liquid into the toilet! You don't want to clog up your sink pipes.

Foot Peeling


Why you should do foot peels

More effective than most foot files or pumice stones

Foot files and pumice stones tend to leave behind scratch marks on your skin. Foot peels give you a new start. If you want to use mechanical exfoliation for your feet without the marks, use a Microplane file. It has smaller holes that won't scratch up your feet.

Relatively short process

Depending on how rough your feet are, it takes up to 2 weeks for the peeling to finish. This is perfect for the winter and spring months when you're not as worried about having presentable feet.

How to do a foot peel

  • Choose any foot peel product that uses acids from fruits. I like to use the Soft and Shiny Peeling Mask from Amazon for $7.

  • Slip the booties on your feet and wait for 1 hr. (Or whatever the instructions say. I usually wait an hour so I can do other things too).

  • Do this every month!
